“Elderly primigravida.” That is what they called me. Because I was carrying a Precious Baby — a baby growing inside a petite 44-year-old woman who had chosen to face this singular journey in a natural way, without pharmacological help.

The end of that journey was very long.

A succession of midwives, doctors, lights, faces I could not name. Time folding in on itself. Thirty-six hours of labour, in which you sleep and suffer and cry. In which you try, again and again, to understand how to push — and it is never enough.

Thirty-six hours in which you come to understand what Pain truly means.

Thirty-six hours in which you give a new meaning to the word Love.
