When you step onto the streets of Chicago, you breathe America — the real America, far from the curated gaze of tourism. An America where the promise of a brilliant life stands face to face with the worn paper cup clutched by a man sitting on the sidewalk.
The bittersweet rhythm of everyday life unfolds before you. The singular light of the blues city sharpens every tone, deepens every shadow. From dawn to dusk you cannot stop — you walk, you wait, you watch, you run.
Then, at some point, the city’s pulse becomes yours. It enters you like a current, sudden and decisive. You stop being a mere observer and start simply being there — alive, present, part of it.
You dissolve into the crowd. You brush up against its daily rituals, begin to read its patterns, its unwritten choreography. Your walk becomes something else: a shared, intimate experience. And it is precisely in that moment that you begin to photograph.
Everyday Heroes was born in October and November 2016, during the Chicago Street Photography Experience — an immersive street photography project under the patronage of the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago, developed alongside Giuseppe Pons, colour photographer and fellow traveller of the streets.
Over ten days straddling Halloween night and one of the most historic moments in Chicago’s sporting memory — the Cubs’ World Series victory, their first in 108 years — the series captures a cross-section of daily life in the largest metropolis of the American heartland. Not the city of postcards, but the city as it lives and breathes: its people, its light, its quiet heroism.
